Suspected Armed Herdsmen Attack Benue DPO’s Convoy, Kill Two Officers

Two police officers have reportedly been killed after suspected armed herdsmen attacked the convoy of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ayilamo, in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.

According to a resident of Ayilamo who spoke on condition of anonymity, the incident occurred as the DPO was returning from Makurdi after an official assignment.

The source said the officers had been newly deployed to the community and were on their way to escort the DPO back to Ayilamo when they encountered the attackers.

The resident stated that the attack occurred at about 6:00 p.m., although the account contained conflicting references to the day of the incident.

The latest attack comes shortly after suspected bandits reportedly invaded Ayilamo community last Thursday, killing seven residents and four police officers.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, DSP Peter Orchia Aondongu, said the DPO had travelled to Makurdi to collect some items before the convoy was attacked on its way back to Ayilamo.

«“The DPO came to Makurdi to carry some things and while going back to Ayilamo, he was attacked and lost two of his men in the attack,” he stated.»

The incident has renewed concerns over the security situation in parts of Benue State, particularly communities affected by recurring attacks.
