Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has honoured 19-year-old Maryam Ibrahim Dan’azumi, the Gombe-born winner of the 46th King Abdulaziz International Qur’anic Competition in Saudi Arabia, with a cash gift of ₦20 million.
Maryam was presented to the First Lady at the Presidential Villa in Abuja by Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, alongside her parents, teachers, school authorities and members of the state delegation.
The young scholar emerged overall winner in the category involving memorisation of the entire Holy Qur’an, recitation, Tajweed and interpretation, competing against contestants from several countries.
Her victory was particularly historic as she became the first female contestant to win the prestigious competition in the year women were admitted into the 46-year-old event.
Receiving the champion, Senator Tinubu described Maryam as a source of pride to Nigerian women and the girl-child, praising her parents, teachers and the Gombe State Government for supporting her development.
“Maryam has brought joy to us. You have made us proud by conquering the world, especially in this area of faith and divine knowledge,” the First Lady said.
She also commended Gombe State’s Tsangaya Integrated School System and Almajiri education programme, describing them as initiatives worthy of national emulation.
Governor Inuwa Yahaya said Maryam’s achievement was not only a source of pride to Gombe State but to Nigeria as a whole.
He disclosed that Maryam’s elder sister, Hajara, had previously represented Nigeria at an international Qur’anic competition in Jordan and emerged victorious.
The Governor expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the First Lady for recognising the young champion’s historic accomplishment.
The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Education, Dr Mohammed Sani Idris, also praised Gombe State’s commitment to inclusive education.
He said Maryam’s success had demonstrated that Qur’anic education could coexist with formal Western education and that both forms of learning could help young Nigerians achieve excellence.
