PDP NAMES SANI ABACHA’S SON KANO GOVERNORSHIP CANDIDATE FOR 2027

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano State has selected Muhammad Sani Abacha, son of former military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, as its governorship candidate for the 2027 election.

Abacha emerged following the withdrawal of the party’s earlier candidate, Muhammad Bello Dalha, after consultations with party stakeholders in Kano and Abuja.

The development was announced on Wednesday, September 16, during an expanded meeting of the Kano State PDP executive committee, where the party conducted a replacement primary to fill the vacant ticket.

Kano PDP Chairman, Bello Gambo Bichi, explained that Dalha had initially won the party’s governorship primary but later stepped down, making a fresh exercise necessary in line with electoral requirements.

He said, “The law says that as a result of withdrawal, a replacement primary must be held. That is what brought us here today. We have affirmed Muhammad Sani Abacha as the gubernatorial candidate of our great party in Kano State.”

The electoral panel chairman, Abba Abdullahi, subsequently declared Abacha the winner of the replacement primary, stating that the process complied with the party’s guidelines and relevant electoral regulations.

The party also announced Yusuf Ado Kibiya, a former factional chairman of the PDP and former Kano State Commissioner for Land and Agriculture, as Abacha’s running mate.

According to Bichi, the deputy governorship slot was allocated to the faction linked to former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, as part of ongoing reconciliation efforts within the Kano PDP.

He said the arrangement had resolved the factional disagreements within the party, adding that other candidates for National Assembly and State House of Assembly seats were also replaced to accommodate members of the different groups.

Representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were reportedly present during the replacement exercise.

Abacha had previously contested the Kano governorship election under the PDP in 2023, finishing third behind the NNPP and APC candidates.
