The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has cautioned security agencies against harassing, intimidating or prosecuting journalists, warning that such actions pose a threat to press freedom and legitimate journalism.
The Guild made the call in a communiqué issued after its Standing Committee meeting in Kano on Friday.
The communiqué, signed by NGE President Eze Anaba and General Secretary Onuoha Ukeh, expressed concern over the use of cybercrime laws and other legislation to restrict journalistic activities.
The editors urged governments at all levels and members of the public to respect press freedom and engage with journalists and media organisations constructively rather than resorting to threats or attacks.
They advised individuals and organisations who feel aggrieved by media reports to seek redress through the Media Ombudsman established by the Newspapers Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria, the NGE, the Nigerian Union of Journalists and the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers.
Call for Fairness Ahead of 2027 Elections
Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the NGE called on federal and state governments to provide a fair environment for all political parties and candidates to campaign freely.
The Guild also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant agencies to treat ruling and opposition parties equally, stressing that fairness was essential to public confidence and electoral integrity.
The editors advised politicians to focus on issue-based campaigns, avoid inflammatory statements and comply with electoral regulations.
They equally urged the media to maintain fairness, objectivity, accuracy and factuality in election reporting.
Concern Over Roads and Economy
On the economy, the NGE encouraged the federal government to sustain its reform efforts while making the welfare of Nigerians a central priority.
The editors expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of federal roads, noting that the situation was creating difficulties for motorists, commuters and businesses while hampering economic activities.
The Guild commended security agencies for their efforts in tackling terrorism, banditry and other crimes, but called for sustained and coordinated action to achieve lasting peace and national unity.
The editors thanked Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the state government and residents for hosting the meeting.
They reaffirmed that good governance, peace, progress, public welfare and respect for democratic values remain essential to building a stable society.
